| Opening a Special Ed Class | There are some valid tips stated below for a teacher of special education who is starting a new school year. Initially these advices adjust with multi-grade Learning Handicapped, or Severely Emotionally Disturbed classes:
Physical classroom arrangement School desks should be arranged so that each student has his/her own private desk. No sharing or grouping, since this results in substantial diversions for the special ed student. Centers should be positioned in various sections of the classroom where children can go when they complete their individual work, so as do not disquiet rest of students. These centers can be full of various amusing things and edutainment like puzzles, easy reading with pictures, and other hands-on material. Both teacher’s and assistant's desks should be placed at the opposite ends of the classroom, back and front, in an effort to supervise for learning process.
Bulletin boards Just as like in a regular classroom, some bulletin boards should be destined for the students' work, whereas other bulletin boards should contain topics that at the same time are also included in the syllabus.
Classroom introductions On the first day, speculate upon browsing through your classroom responsibilities (yet, not rules – children display resistance straightway), school standards, and your personal expectations. This former aspect has great importance. Majority of the students have been growing accustomed to low expectations from their previous teachers. Consequently, these children have tried not much, from the academic and behavioral viewpoint. If your personal expectations are high but realistic, they’ll aspire to this level and justify your hopes thus!
