The most extended IQ test given to children in a psychoeducational evaluation is the WISC-III, from the Wechsler series of intelligence scales for children. This test evaluates a range of abilities to find out a level of global intellectual functioning. The WISC-III is divided into a few subtests. Each subtest helps to discover a child's individual strengths and weaknesses, his or her propensities. This IQ test for gifted children helps to evaluate general level of intelligence and his or her individual intelligence models. But, as many scientists consider, it is not reliable when it deals with children with very high or very low level of intelligence. The WISC-III is useful for identifying intelligence patterns in the LD/Gifted child, as well as an LD child with middle-level intelligence.
When using this test towards the most gifted children you won’t have the precise results. An author of this test, D. Wechsler created this test for kids with average intelligence level. It’s not intended for extremes of intelligence measuring. For the most gifted children results exceed the limit of the WISC-III scales. And there is no opportunity to define the child's particular strengths and weaknesses or to determine the highest giftedness level. Many researchers use the WISC-III in case if they suppose that a gifted child may have a learning disability. If they want to have a correct level of a school age child's math abilities or visual-spatial abilities level, they use the SB: IV. But this test also has the same low ceiling as the WISC-III. These tests are not very useful for retarded or gifted people. They are clinical tests.
There is also older IQ test - the SB: LM. Many people believe that it shouldn’t be used any more. But this statement is far from truth. This test is pretty objective because of its high level verbal reasoning items, which shows thinking ability in verbal and mathematical way. It is much easier to to distinguish between highly and exceptionally intellectually gifted children thanks to this test. The Riverside Publishing Company plans to bring together the best features of the SB: LM into the form of a new test, the Stanford-Binet: Fifth Edition. But it will take years to realize this plan into life.
It has to be mentioned, that a score on one intelligence test cannot be transformed to a score on another intelligence test by any mathematical means. The information provided by these tests cannot be converted into the point system of another test.
