| Who Are They Highly Gifted? | We might meet highly gifted children among those who demonstrate asynchronous development. They perceive and relate to the world in unique ways owing to their strengths and high cognitive abilities.
Frequently these children are recognized on account of IQ tests super scores, generally above the 140 IQ range. Others may be prodigies in science, math, languages or the arts for example. It happens that gifted child exceeds the norm extremely, scoring 170 of IQ.
Highly gifted children have peculiar attributes such as the extreme need to:
1. Be taught at accelerated pace. 2. Scrutinize material more closely. 3. Evince incredible qualities of energy, imagination, intellectual impudence, sensitivity, and passion, which are not typical to the general population.
Gifted child of 160 and more is as different from the child of 130 IQ as that child is different from the child with standard IQ level. The extent of children in this high range may be larger than previously thought. Highly gifted children are particularly vulnerable, because of their unique characteristic features. They are lacking a specialized protection because very little has been done to build up suitable curriculum and non-traditional alternatives for these children.
