| Help “Gifted” Enter the College | “Gifted” children have a number of positive characteristics such as high intellectual, creative, or artistic performance, ability to be a leader, high ability to study and knowledge in specific academic fields. In this article we describe some measures, which will be useful for gifted children and their parents in a prospect of entering the college.
Some characteristics of gifted children may affect college planning. They are:
1. As usual gifted children have diversity of talents (they are often called multitalented or that they have multipotential). Gifted children very often concentrate on one academic field although they may have different interests. These kids have to be encouraged to develop all sides of his or her talent.
2. Gifted children are idealists. They love to work hard and improve their knowledge and performance. They want to change the world for the better and to explore their highly intellectual ideas. For bringing these ideas into life gifted kids need good academic support. Often it will be useful for them to attend integrating disciplines lesson.
3. Gifted children often afraid not to live up to their parents’ and teachers’ expectations. So, it’s very important to give moral support to such kids in their college ambitions.
4. It is easy for a gifted student to get the highest grades in the School among his or her less brilliant classmates. He or she doesn’t know what competition from other gifted students is. Parents and teachers have to explain to such students that getting the highest grades is not the point at all.
Very often the majority of gifted children need special advanced program by 7th or 8th grade. Their high school curriculum have to be edited since such students need a vide range of academic options. This is good opportunity to prepare gifted children to college reality.
