One of the reasons why some gifted children are not prepared sufficiently for college is because counseling programs differ so much from region to region. In order to prepare each gifted kid better for the college a program based on the following sequence should be installed:
Seventh and eighth grades: Emphasis on self-awareness, time management foundation, work and study skills, and career awareness. Students contrive a prior academic plan that includes courses required by the state and college.
Ninth and tenth grades: Students have to be prepared to make their final decisions and to set their aims. Students’ interests become formed. They observe as their academic talents, values, and goals are transformed into possible careers perspectives. Gifted kids realize that some of their talents and skills will transform into vocation and the rest of them-into leisure activities.
Eleventh and twelfth grades: Students have to understand an important meaning of practical side of college and career planning, including college applications, exposure to professions and job internships etc.
Very often because of variety of interests and skills some gifted children have difficulties choosing his or her future occupation. Parents and teachers can help students to make their choice in next ways:
1. By showing a wide range of occupations in these days.
2. Nobody should ever tell the child about expectations –it should be student’s choice only. Just ask open-ended future carrier questions.
3. Stimulate a student to explore all careers he or she is interested in.
4. A grate experience for student is a volunteership in local community.
Choosing the right college is very important for a child. That’s why there must be a lot of information about all kind of colleges. Sources of information can be different – school library will be a good start. Also it is useful to study college guides, multimedia resources, and visit college web sites the child is interested in. The list of possible future colleges should consist at least from 20-25 variants. The most important moments in making the picture of a college are colleges' aims, recruitment procedures, support for incoming freshmen, academic life, location, grading policies, size, cost, course offerings, honors programs, faculty, grading policies, selection of applicants, and availability of financial aid (including scholarships). Also parents may visit campuses and have a talk to students, admission personnel about their college.
