| International Definitions | In Canada, each province varies in definition. The Ministry of Education and Training for the province of Ontario has adopted a definition of "giftedness" which is follows: "An unusually advanced degree of general intellectual ability that requires differentiated learning experiences of a depth the breadth beyond those normally provided in the regular school program to satisfy the level of educational potential indicated."
Quebec Province: Canada Like the United States, each Canadian province has its own mandate to provide educational services to students. For example, in Quebec there is no provision for ability grouping and it is generally against government policy to provide special services to any group of students. Total integration in regular classrooms is encouraged; however, the existence of mandated classes for low-functioning students in self-contained classrooms constitutes a form of ability grouping. To attract high-ability students away from private schools, some public schools are specialized, with emphases on academics, arts, or sports. These specialized public schools conduct their own screening.
British Columbia: Canada A student is considered gifted when she/he keeps proved or potential abilities testifying about extremely high capability concerning intelligence, creative potential, or the skills connected with specific disciplines. Gifted learners often show notable abilities in more than one field of activity. Occasionally they display exceptional concentration in their distinctive areas of talent or interest. Nevertheless, they may also have concurrent disabilities and should not be expected to have strengths in all areas of mental performance.
England A definition of gifted and talented: Five per cent pacemakers of the school population in academic disciplines ascribe to “gifted” and five per cent in other disciplines to “talented”. The gifted are those with great dexterity in one or more academic disciplines (a child does not have to be gifted in all subjects), and the talented are those with supreme ability in sport, music, visual arts and/or kinds of performing art. Schools are emboldened to identify the top 5-10 percents of each year class as gifted or talented, in spite of the common level of ability within the school. Some schools prefer to use benchmark tests to recognize their gifted children. In the main, distinguishing characteristics of the gifted are as follows. However, children are unique and no two children will present the same or all of the subsequent characteristics. Among the most typical behaviors of intellectually gifted learners are a deep sense of curiosity, intense focus on their current line of learning, the ability to make linkages between ideas, and a deep sense of morality and justice.
