Rights of Disabled Children

childrenAll over the world children continue to meet inequality in their everyday lives. For many disabled children there are usual facts of life about discrimination, abuse and lack of access to education. There is one project initiated by the International Save Children Alliance Task Group on Disability and Discrimination. This project collected examples of good practice in implementing disabled children's rights. The project aimed to combat the lack of information by collecting these small-scale and isolated examples. Also this project helps to understand lives of disabled children.

The aim of the project is to popularize the rights of disabled children by:
• Improving understanding of people about the situation of disabled children and the problems that affect them;
• Inspiring others by providing examples of what is already being done, with a focus on countries of the South;
• Providing practical and realistic steps for implementation.

There are a lot of stories that illustrate almost every Article of the Convention on the Rights of the Child:
• Right for survival and development: disabled children are less likely to survive childhood than other children;
• Right for family life and protection from cruelty and neglect: many are abandoned or neglected or even removed from their families;
• Right to non-discrimination: laws and policies in many countries are based on out-dated discriminatory assumptions.

The right for education
One of the problems for disabled relate with the right for education. This means that education is a high priority for disabled children and their families. But also education is an issue. Discrimination can be more easily identified and addressed than some other issues.

Problems
The project identified some problems. These problems are related with abuse of disabled children's right to education. Very often disabled children are tolerated. This is in case they can fit in to the education system. In another case they may be segregated. More often they are completely denied an education.
