A lot of children experience problems while learning mathematics but there exists certain group of children that suffer from math disability. Such kids will have difficulties doing well in all or some aspects of math. These children often have difficulties with other disciplines, for example reading. Children with warning signs of math disability or dyscalculia should be treated with special exceptional attention.
So what exactly is a math disability? Mathematics learning disability is characterized by a sudden learning problem after a teacher (or a tutor) has provided a pupil with some knowledge and learning experience. The kid with math disability is experiencing a lot of difficulties making enough progress in such school subject as mathematics, achieving appropriate learning skills. Latest researches have shown that children with dyscalculia also have reading disability, hyperactivity disorder or deficit of attention. Other researchers confirmed that group of learners with math disability had no difficulties in other spheres of school life.
If a child has math disability he (she) may also has difficulties connected with one or more following areas: memory, visual-spatial ability and cognitive development. Problems with memory greatly effect process of studying mathematics in different ways. A pupil may find it difficult to remember arithmetic details in a quick way. Later it also would be difficult in the higher grades when problems with memory will cause child’s disability to remember necessary steps to solve other problems, for such kid it is almost impossible to learn some specific symbols or formulas. Delays in cognitive development may cause problems in processing and learning information that would have harmful effect on the whole educational process. Visual-spatial difficulties may hinder child's ability to perform correctly math problems.
Nowadays 5% to 8% of children of school age are having a math disability. Only complete understanding of the problem, patience and systematic work will break the ice and help such kids to overcome difficulties, struggle hard while learning basic mathematics skills and mastering more advance mathematics.
