| Causes of APD | The sources and causes unfortunately remain unknown. In the early childhood auditory processing disorder may be connected with other conditions such as attention deficit disorder, delay of development, dyslexia, speech delay and language disorders, autism and connected disorders. This term sometimes may be misapplied to kids who have no hearing problems and language disorders but have difficulties in the process of learning.
 The main causes of APD may include chronic infections of the ear, trauma of the head, lead poisoning. There exist a lot of possible causes that may lead to APD and even combinations of causes so it is vitally necessary to provide individual approach in detecting this disorder for each child.
Only audiologists (hearing specialists) may put the right diagnosis and indicate APD. Audiologist have at there disposal all necessary requirements to perform auditory processing test and determine APD. In order to diagnose APD, the audiologist will conduct a series of tests in a sound-treated room. Tests are directed on listeners’ perception of variety of signals and responding to them (by repeating, pushing the button etc). There are also tests that evaluate the auditory system's physiologic responses to sounds. Majority of these tests may be conducted for the children of the certain age, at least 7 or 8 years old, cause of changeability in brain function in younger children.
Always keep in mind that APD can’t be indicated only by the list of symptoms. Even if your child shows an incredible amount of symptoms of this disorder don’t hurry to make any serious decision, only accurate and careful diagnostics (audiologist) can identify the real problem.
When a diagnosis of APD is made, the nature of the disorder is determined. There are a lot of types of APD, and keep in mind that each child is unique and may manifest auditory processing disorder in different ways. But still it is important to determine type of APD and provide concrete treatment taking into consideration individual and specific features of disorder.
